Tanya’s Journey as one of the youngest up and coming fashion photographers in Los Angeles,

started in her teen years, when she lived and worked in a relatively small town in Czech Republic called Ostrava!

According to her own words, she used to be a big admirer of Shaun Alexander’s work and dream about shooting with such a photographer from an early age. Not knowing that the law of attractions were on her side and a few short years later, She was discovered and contacted directly by her all time favorite photographer,Shaun Alexander from a small community of models and photographers forum in Czech Republic

A faithful day that changed both their lives forever! Shortly after shooting series of incredible sessions with Shaun in Prague, Tanya moved to Los Angeles in order to pursue her dreams of modeling and all the other opportunities that this great city has to offer a young and talented individual like her

The number of incredible work these two created together is the testament to their mutual admiration for one another. It did not take too long before Tanya picked up a camera and started experimenting the challenges behind the camera as a photographer

Her very first photo shoot was a combination of natural passion and talent combined with years of paying attention to details while working and assisting her favorite fashion photographer and mentor!

It was no surprise to Shaun nor anyone else to see her talent blossom or even explode in such a short amount of time, and find her true love and passion behind the camera as opposed to being in front of the camera as a beautiful model. OLD FASHION HOLLYWOOD STYLE PHOTOGRAPHY LIGHTING

This week, I had a pleasure of working with a very beautiful young teen model named from Orange County, her old soul and old fashion beauty was the inspiration to create these lovely images that depict the popular old Hollywood movie stars of the 40’s, 50’s or 60’s

Ok, I must admit that my fascination with the old Hollywood Glamour style of photography started with following some of my favorite movie stars as a kid , icons like; Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Liz Taylor, Marlyn Dietrich , Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart , James Dean, etc… I could not get enough of watching those beautiful Black and white movies and collecting their stunning black and white headshots and movie posters…to me and to rest of the world, they represented fame, life style, and class that everyone could only dream of! Not knowing that someday I’d be able to work with some of them myself! but I always knew that behind every iconic image stands a great photographer and that became my motto and inspiration to learn and study some of the greatest photography masters of those eras and try to understand the one magical formula they all had in common! and that was the “LIGHTING” Which may seem simple at first, yet it is as complex as it can be!

Simple, because almost every photographer back then used one or two lights to create the most beautiful portraits, for instance George Hurrel , the master of old Hollywood glamour portrait photography, his lighting was very simple and yet, his work seemed so beautiful and complex, because no one could do what he did…and that made him very special! the same goes with Helmet Newton, Richard Avedon and few other top photographers and masters I have written about in my previous posts

I guess, what I am trying to say is that ” only by perseverance and patience one can truly master his craft! and only then he is remembered as one!”

Shaun Alexander Photography not in Black and white

Most people always ask me if I shoot everything in Black and white!

To everyone’s surprise, I shoot everything in color and then converting them to a perfect shade of BW

you may wonder why? well, after decades of doing what I do and teaching photography for at least half of my long 30+ years in the photography business, for some reason I personally prefer Black and White images due to the fact that they offer less distraction and more information about the subject, lighting, contrast and the composition of each photographs VS too colorful images that may distract away from those important components, if not done well

Therefore, keeping in mind those very basic rules ( lighting, Contrast and composition), color photos can also be equally appealing!

These extremely colorful images offer a similar experience as my black and white photograophy work, yet with vibrant and exciting colors

let you be the judge of that!

Iconic headshots for celebrity actor Kiko Ellsworth by Shaun Alexander studios – Hollywood California

Recently I had a pleasure of working with a very talented actor and an unbelievable human being named Kiko Ellsworth, His extraordinary talent as an actor is like nothing I have ever seen in the past 30 years of my career in Hollywood as a celebrity fashion photographer. I must say our shoot was magical and here are a few words he wrote me after our amazing photo session:
I believe Shaun Alexander is the most generous photographer I have ever worked with. Generous with so many things from his personal take on life to the passion he bursts with behind the camera. I was definitely impressed with the sumptuous tiramisu he shared with me after the shoot as well as the fact that he superbly hand made himself.

As soon as I walked into his studio I knew from the feel, the music, the adornments, to the costumes and his assistants that this was the kind of warm yet high calibre studio I had envisioned for this shoot. It was energetic, artsy, layered with endless possibilities and very inviting to have an all day shoot in.

Natural and effortless passion behind the camera with exciting bursts of ecstatic rapture every time he got “that” shot! I enjoyed the experience of seeing Shaun get a great shot whoever he might’ve been getting it from at the moment. Although I gotta admit, on this amazing day I was grateful it was from me.

We got this one particular shot (of many) that I swear was put together by the heavens and our angels…you had to be there for the serendipity of how this all came together…(you know when words just won’t suffice…but i’ll try)

So, out of nowhere during the middle of the shoot he pulls out this random 3/4 length brown and beige coat, we paired it with one of my hats that I, by pure chance alone, threw in the wardrobe bag last minute, to his gut instinct to switch to the perfect background….magic….pure and simple magic….what came next I never experienced before in the 15 years of my entire professional acting career.

Snap snap click click….He shows me one of the shots….. and I was literally HIT with a tidal wave of emotion that brought me to a convulsion of tears…whoa tiger…whats going on here?….Is this really happening right now? All I could do in that moment was put my head down, fist to my eyes and weep like a little baby. I know i’m a sensitive guy but damn! What I didn’t know, was that I was waiting for a shot like that for my entire acting career. What he captured in that shot was something I had been expressing on camera for many years, but never caught it in a still image. Something that expressive, raw, perfect wardrobe, masterfully lit between light and shadow….thank you Shaun. The perfect environment was created for me to be at ease and let my unique authentic light shine.

This shoot turned out so much better than I imagined! Thank you for your artistry Shaun. It brought out the best in mine!

My experience with Top Fashion Photographer Shaun Alexander

Shaun Alexander is a top fashion photographer who’s taken a great fashion photograph to a higher level. During his shoots atmosphere is a really important thing to him. It makes the people he works with and himself more creative and relaxed. Even the concentration level will be higher so the results will be exhausting. He is a man of details and he will always keep his energie high so the photoshoot will be worth it from the beginning to the very last end.

He is also a man with patience, because for him is the most important thing to create something amazing all together. As an assistant of Shaun I really can learn so many things from him. He takes time during the shoots to explain what he is doing and even more important, why. He always want to be sure I get the things he is doing.

I will call him a true artist because his photographs are more than just a photograph, Besides being a top fashion photographer, we can call him a true painter. Inspired by the biggest painters like Rembrandt, van Gogh, Renoir, Monet, he makes his own artwork. Instead of using real brushes he is using light as a main ingredient in his work. With this way of working he is creating almost three dimensional photographs Every piece in the picture will feel like you can really touch it. Every highlight he is using, is used for a reason.

His job in life is to make our world even more beautiful. It gives people confidence, because he shows everyones their true beauty. He knows how to catch everyone’s beauty and still keep the person as they really are

EXPLORE THE MOST ICONIC CITIES IN THE WORLD WITH LOS ANGELES TOP FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER

The image below was taken at Grand Central Station in New York City during my last visit to NY. This moving image is made of a few still shots at a high speed and then recreated as a Gif file animation,. This is an old technique used by many website and advertisers, to make those annoying pop up ads…:-) but in much more artistic way!

Grand Central Station truly lives up to it’s name, This Architectural wonder is NY’s pride possession and the passage to 1000’s of travelers every day

I love NY and all it’s beautiful wonders !

I had a blast shooting with Maryam, She was fun, exciting and super photogenic as you can see below, She was even sweet enough to write this

“It was such an amazing experience working with Shaun Alexander. He is truly a perfectionist and the passion in his craft can be seen throughout his work. Before entering his studio and workplace, I had a feeling that we would create magic and surely after the photoshoot magic was created. We commenced the photoshoot with him first doing my hair and makeup, followed by his lovely stylist Tania styling me with various exquisite outfits. Subsequently, we began shooting while he simultaneously taught another photographer about the art of photography and the different aspects of lighting. He got me so intrigued and interested that I started asking questions too, and he gladly taught the both of us. It was truly an unforgettable experience, and a pleasure working with him. I look forward to working with him again in the near future. “
