CHIAROSCURO ITALIAN TERM FOR LIGHT & SHADOWS
Fashion Photography and Chiaroscuro Lighting Used by renaissance
masters and world famous photographers, such as Helmut Newton,
Hurrell & Shaun Alexander
A technique widely used by some of the greatest masters, such as
Leonardo Da Vinci, Rembrandt, Giovanni Baglione, Raphael,
Caravaggio and many more renowned artists throughout the
history. They all had one thing in common, The perfect understanding
of using LIGHT , SHADOWS and CONTRAST in order to create a realistic
three dimensional illusion on a two dimensional medium.
Easier said than done and there only a few in the world that have
mastered their craft to perfection and among those I have a few favorites:
FELLINI
know as the most influential film makers of all time!
ALFRED HITCHCOCK
Master of suspense and psychological thriller, only using light and
shadow and power of mind and suggestions to the rest
MARTIN SCORSESE
Is the living and breathing legendary director
Martin Scorsese are among the most famous film makers and cinematographers with
great appreciation for the visual arts, George Hurrel, Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon,
and a few more that have always fascinated and inspired me with their iconic master pieces that
have revolutionized the world of photography and cinematography as we know it!
It was by studying these great masters that helped me to develop the senses and the
eye needed to create the perfect formula which I now use in everything
I create, from my paintings to photography and even my cinematography,
I no longer have any limitations to what I can do with my camera or even paint brush!
GEORGE HURRELL
Was one of Hollywood’s greatest celebrity photographers, known
for his stunning old fashion black and white photos of the legendary
movie stars, such as Humphrey Bogart, Carol Lombard, Clark Gable
and many more…soon his lighting technique became the trend for
creating beautiful headshots for those famous and some infamous
actors at the time, and among those, I have my favorites:
HELMUT NEWTON
The Famous fashion Photographer known for striking provocative black and white images.
Pay close attention to the way he uses his Blacks, Whites and Gray tones!
RICHARD AVEDON
The most published Fashion photographer in the world
Now you understand why studying the works of these greatest masters
had brought me one step closer to where I am today, my fascination and
admiration along with my passion for
art and photography had made me an artist with a great appreciation for
the old and new!
helping me to become a Renaissance man with a touch of Modernism
in my work, not only as a fashion photographer but as a photographer in general
Below you’ll find a few images using various lighting techniques in order
to ARE A FEW IMAGES USING SEVERAL DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES
I’VE USED TO DEMONSTRATE HOW I USE THE CONCEPT OF
(CHIAROSCURO) IN MY FASHION & FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY
Here I simply used that technique to create
an illusion that the gun in John Travolta’s
hand is coming out of the image, which in
fact is just a poster the wall where the
model is leaning against

Creating beautifully composed blacks with carefully orchestrated
whites , atoned harmoniously in the midst of all kinds of shades of
gray is a technique that I have been trying to master for decades,
doing everything possible to turn the clock back with my images to
make them look and feel timeless and old, yet modern and fresh!
Despite of how ironic it may sound 🙂 no matter how technologically
advance we will become, there is nothing more beautiful than an old
painting of a master, or a great photograph taken by a film camera
and printed on a real photographic paper in a darkroom….
here I said it….I am still a big fan of film photography owning
and using all of my film cameras from my old time favorite
Mamiya RZ , Hasselblads 500 to an old 8×10 Eastman Kodak,
that I use time to time for personal projects
I am also blessed that many young enthusiasts and pro photographers
travel from incredible destinations to attend my courses, hoping that
my years of expertise and passion to teach all these techniques can
inspire and touch the lives of those that are willing to go the extra
mile to become the Best photographers in the world!
